The Application of AR to Building

Luis Perusquia Berrizbeitia is president and CEO of Azul Real Estate and IConstruction, which are residential and commercial construction management firms. In these roles, Luis Perusquia Berrizbeitia oversees and is responsible for construction operations.

The construction site has been transformed thanks to the advent of augmented reality (AR) tools that assist project managers with tasks that include creating and making adjustments to building information models (BIM). AR allows construction managers to merge virtual/digital data into a real construct.

In the case of BIM development, AR allows managers to make adjustments to floor plans. When a 2D plan has been drafted, AR tools allow managers to superimpose a 3D model over the 2D draft. AR tools provide interactive, detailed models of projects that can be presented to clients.

Moreover, AR technology allows project managers to assess a physical property's measurements, calculating a building’s height, depth, and width, providing a more accurate picture of the structure. This can ultimately save money and time. At the time of presentation, clients get the most realistic picture of the project upon completion, giving them time to make adjustments if requested.

However, AR really shows its value at site throughout the construction process by allowing workers to make changes to the building model. Workers can use a headset or mobile device to not only display pictures of the structure, but to make modifications; i.e., removing or relocating walls in the structure. Corrections and errors can be addressed before making changes to the physical structure.
